Right Galvalume Steel for Your Needs

As shown above, the common types of GL steel include galvalume coil, galvalume corrugated sheet, and galvalume plain sheet. Thanks to its shiny spangled appearance, GL steel can be used as exterior panels without a layer of paint.  Gnee Steel offers GL steel of 0.12-1.2 mm in thickness and 600-1,250 mm in width. Besides, the weight of the GL steel coil and the length of the flat sheet can be customized on the basis of your needs. Please talk to us for more details.

Great Features of Galvalume Steel

1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

Similar to galvanized steel, the Al-Zn coating will protect the base metal. Especially, when the zinc layer is worn,  there will be a layer of dense alumina to prevent the base metal from further corrosion. It is proved that GL steel will serve 3 times longer than GI steel does. That’s why GL steel is preferred in severe environments.

2. Great Heat Resistance

Aluminum-zinc coated steel has good heat resistance to withstand temperatures of more than 300 degrees Celsius, which is often used in chimney pipes, oven illuminators, and lampshades.

3. High Heat Reflectivity

The thermal reflectivity of GL is twice of galvanized steel so it is often used as a heat-insulating material. Therefore, it is a better choice for roofing in the hot climate.

4. Beautiful Appearance

The surface of GL steel is smooth and with spangles, which makes it good-looking. So it can be used directly without painting.

Wide Applications of GL Steel

1. Construction Industry, for example, roofing, interior, and exterior wall panels, soundproof wall, pipe, garage, etc.
2. Automobile Industry, such as mufflers, exhaust pipe, wiper attachment, fuel tanks, truck containers, etc.
3. Home Appliances, for instance, refrigerator backboard, air conditioner, microwave oven, LED backlight, electric cabinet, etc.
4. Agricultural Uses, like a greenhouse, granary, piggery, chicken house, etc.
5. Other Industries, such as heat exchangers, dryers, etc.

Is Galvalume Sheet A Good Roofing Material?

Definitely, yes. GL sheet is light in weight but strong enough, which is a new kind of roofing material. Also, due to its high thermal reflectivity, GL roofing sheet is preferred in hot climates. Moreover, it has a gorgeous and smooth appearance so it is widely used in commercial, civil, and public buildings.

What Is Galvalume Steel?

Galvalume steel is similar to galvanized steel. It uses cold-rolled steel sheet as a substrate and then is coated with 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon at 600 °C. While galvalume coating aims to protect steel from oxidation. Due to the protection of aluminum, it is better able to resist rusting and corrosion. If the coating thicknesses of GL steel and GI steel are equal, the GL one will be more long-lasting to use in the same environment. The common manufacturing process is known as the hot-dipping process. Let’s review step by step.

1. Pre-treatment

Through the pre-treatment system, the contaminants on the surface of the base metal will be removed. It often includes degreasing, rinsing, pickling, etc.

2. Hot-dip Galvalume Process

After going through the annealing furnace, steel sheets are dipped into the Al-Zn pool. Then there is an air knife to remove the extra coating to keep the thickness of the coating.

3. Inspection & Coiling

The coated steel sheet will go through the quality control system and then be rolled up for sale.

So the structure of Galvalume steel includes:

  • Base metal (cold-rolled steel sheets)
  • Al-Zn coating layer (top and back sides).

GALVALUME STEEL COIL
AZ50 vs AZ150 Galvalume Steel

The galvalume coating thickness is expressed by AZ+number. So AZ50 here means the aluminized zinc layer is 50 g per square meter (double sides); while AZ150 indicates the Al-Zn coating weight of 150 g/m2 double sides. The Al-Zn layer has a thickness of about 20 μm per side for AZ150. In comparison, the AZ150 will be more durable than AZ50. Also, it will be more expensive. At Gnee Steel, we can offer AZ30 to AZ150 galvalume steel sheets and coils to choose from.

What Color Is Galvalume Sheet?
The galvalume sheet is silver-white in color, with regular spangles. It looks not bright and shiny as a galvanized sheet, but its surface is more smooth. You can check the pictures below.

Which Is Better Galvanized or Galvalume Steel?
As for corrosion resistance, galvalume is better than galvanized steel. GI and GL steel are very similar. Both of them are coated to protect the base metal from rust. The coating allows metal panels to last decades longer than non-coated metal. Essentially, GL steel is 55% aluminum to 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon alloy coated sheet steel. While GI is coated with a zinc layer. Al-Zn coating combines the toughness of zinc with the rust resistance of aluminum and provides barrier protection on the metal surface. It performs better in fighting corrosion than zinc coating. However, if the zinc coating is scratched, it can continue to corrode. So the service life of GL steel will be longer than that of GI steel. Also, GL steel has better heat resistance so that it is more suitable for home appliances. However, in terms of the price, the galvalume sheet price will be higher than that of galvanized sheet.

How Long Will Galvalume Last?
The service life of Al-Zn steel is about 40-60 years. Actually, it mainly depends on the thickness of galvalume coating, as well as the use environment. When galvalume roofing is installed in the right environment, they are able to last decades.

Does Galvalume Metal Rust?
Galvalume steel has strong corrosion resistance. But galvalume steel is actually a kind of iron steel. So it will rust finally when the protective coating is broken. It often rusts from the cut edge. Because the galvalume coating is made with less zinc, the anodic protection is poor. When a certain point of the GL sheet is corroded, the rusted area will spread over the entire surface.

Can You Paint Galvalume Steel?
Of course. The galvalume coating has great adhesion, which makes it easy to paint. You can paint it with different colors for decorative or aesthetic purposes, like PPGL steel.

Galvalume Sheet Price
In comparison, the galvalume sheet price will be higher than that of GI sheets. It is because of its great properties. Besides, the number of galvalume sheet manufacturers is less. Commonly, the price starts from $ 800 per ton. And the galvalume coil price keeps rising in recent months. Please contact us for the latest price.

Gnee Group is one of the top galvalume sheet manufacturers in China, which has 17 years of experience in this industry. We have our own factory, advanced production line, and professional teams. We welcome your visit sincerely.
